VERY LOW HEAD TURBINE

Coastal has secured exclusive rights to specific sites in Canada and is investigating sites throughout North America and internationally.  The  VLHTM technology has undergone an extensive international development  program and is producing power into the electrical grid in France.  This patented technology will compensate for head changes with variation of the river flow to maintain nominal efficiency of 85%.

The VLHTM turbine is designed to fit into gates at existing civil works thereby eliminating those costs, the time of permitting and constructing those facilities and eliminating the environmental impact of conventional hydro facilities. Such sites are often encountered along water control weirs, navigation canals, irrigation canals, dams built in small communities and municipal water intakes.

The VLHTM turbine is entirely submersible allowing a very silent operation and almost no visual impact. It is mounted slanted and can be removed from the sluice passage way by a lifting system so the unit can be raised for maintenance or to recuperate the full evacuation capacity of the sluice during high flow.  The low rotational speed of the runner (35 rpm) and its low velocity make the VLHTM turbine a fish friendly turbine, which will allow fish migration through the turbine runner.

OTHER TURBINE TECHNOLOGIES

Coastal continues to develop and test hydrokinetic water turbines under the management of Dr. Brian Kirke.  These turbines are designed for open-flow river or tidal applications and may be deployed downstream of the  VLHTM turbine sites.  Hydrokinetic units will provide future market opportunities in for both river and tidal environments both domestically and internationally.

FINANCIAL MODEL SOFTWARE

Coastal has also completed the design of our own financial projection and project feasibility software for the hydrokinetic turbines, since no industry specific software was available off-the-shelf.  This software will provide an ongoing powerful tool for Coastal to utilize in the feasibility analysis of individual projects; the development and optimization of our technologies and to provide detailed financial projections and analysis for the investment community.
